Every year, Georgia taxpayers go through the same routine. We gather our documents, calculate what we owe, and send our state income tax payment off to Atlanta. It feels automatic — just another obligation that disappears into a system far removed from our neighborhoods, our families, and our businesses.
But what if you had a say in where those dollars made an impact?
What if instead of simply paying your Georgia income tax into the general fund, you could direct those dollars back into Alpharetta — strengthening the very people who protect your home, your business, and your community?
That is exactly what the LESS Crime Act allows you to do.
Enacted in 2023, the LESS Crime Act (O.C.G.A. § 48-7-29.25) gives Georgia taxpayers the opportunity to receive a dollar-for-dollar state income tax credit when they contribute to a qualified law enforcement foundation. This is not a deduction that slightly reduces your taxable income. It is a direct tax credit that reduces your Georgia income tax liability dollar for dollar.
That means if you owe the State of Georgia $5,000 and are approved to contribute $5,000 under the LESS Crime Act, your contribution satisfies that tax obligation. Instead of your tax dollars flowing into the state’s general fund, they stay local — supporting public safety right here in Alpharetta.
Through the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation, those redirected dollars directly support the Alpharetta Police Department and other public safety professionals in our city. The Foundation works to assist police, fire, communications, and civilian personnel through the purchase of equipment and the creation of programs that help them pursue excellence in public safety.
When contributions come in through the LESS Crime Act, they can help fund:
- Advanced and specialized training for officers
- Modern equipment and technology enhancements
- Recruitment and retention incentives
- Officer wellness and support initiatives
- Programs that strengthen community engagement
These are not abstract benefits. They are real, tangible investments that strengthen the safety and stability of Alpharetta. Better-trained officers respond with greater confidence. Modern equipment improves efficiency and effectiveness. Retention incentives help keep experienced professionals serving our community instead of seeking opportunities elsewhere.
The LESS Crime Act is available to a wide range of Georgia taxpayers, including:
- Single filers or heads of household, up to $5,000
- Married couples filing jointly, up to $10,000
- LLC members, S-Corporation shareholders, and partnerships, up to $10,000
- Corporations, up to 75% of their Georgia income tax liability
Participation requires pre-approval through the Georgia Department of Revenue and is subject to annual statewide limits, so applying early is important. Once approved, you make your contribution to the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation and claim the credit when filing your Georgia return.
At its heart, the LESS Crime Act is about local impact. You cannot eliminate your state income tax bill, but you can decide how it works for your city. By partnering with the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation, you are not giving extra — you are choosing to invest intentionally in the people who safeguard Alpharetta every single day.
Redirect your taxes. Support your police and public safety professionals. Strengthen Alpharetta — without spending an additional dollar beyond what you already owe.
